That was my first brush with the darkness of death. We were talking by a small fire on Sunset Beach on the west shore of Oahu, it was around 1 or 2 in the morning, about 10 of us had biked over just before dusk, to be there to get an early start on the surfing. Out of nowhere a brilliant bluewhite flash lights up the night, the is a sharp loud crash,a shower of sparks a few hundred feet inland and another lower more powerful explosion, smoke, more sparks,,,,silence, dead silence. All of this had happened in a space of 15-20 seconds. The first thought was we had unknowingly gotten on a Naval gunnery range, but there were no more rounds. We went over to where the explosion was, I don't know qiute how to describe how we got there, it was kind of a scared shitless crawl run, back toward the road, where our bikes were parked. When we got there we found the car, the car that had gone out of control left the highway, slid silently thru the wet grass and taken out a powerline pole and transformer, the second explosion was the transformer landing on top of the car, there were 4 people in the car, 2 girls,2 guys,2 unharmed,1 injured with a broken arm,leg and ribs and one pretty young girl about my age,was not breathing, no pulse, no movement, still warm, limp, hard to carry away from the car she was so limp, other than some facial lacs no bleeding, just limp, very, very limp. we cover her with a blanket, but not her face, still hoping we are wrong. Finally about 30 minutes later police and ambulances arrive, they care for the injured guy and take him to Kaneohe Hospital,he will survive, the pretty young girl did not, sad, so sad.

What brings this up to the surface is the death last night of a first cousin of my son-in-law, his name was Clay, he was 27, he was a Fireman/Paramedic. Clay and Cory (Cory is my son-in-law) were more like siblings, both only children, both firefighters, Clay worked for the Galveston FD, Cory for the Longview FD, both love fishing and being outdoors. Clay was a gregarious, full of life young man, still single and living large on the Strand. He had just bought a new bike about a week ago, he had spent the afternoon Sunday cleaning it after being at the beach that morning, His roomate said he wanted to "blow dry" it, he did not wear his helmet, that is irrelavent as he lost control and hit a fence at what police described as "a very high rate of speed" he died instantly. His parents, one can't imagine the pain of outliving your children, I never want to, I lost both my parents before I was 17, that was bad enough. Life is full of pain and loss but also happiness, joy and exuberence. Clay in his final few moments of exuberence has left his parents with a life of pain.

It is so sad, we will miss him, his Pickup with flames on the front fenders won't be pullin in the driveway to go fishin' anymore.
If only he could angle away and above the slower larger ship he could slip quickly behind the third planet out from this yellow star. His ship was damaged from the near miss from the Claw torpedo the cruiser had launched. His horizontal stabilizer rocket would not engage,he needed to land to make repairs, soon. Thanks to his lucky nine lives, oops,we're down to six now, he was within a dozen parsecs of this blue green planet when he emerged from Prrr drive. He had been trying, unsuccessfully,to locate this backwater hole in the universe in his visorscan, as he desperately needed to communicate his location via ESPergnomic link to Felinious Command Central, alas, it was not on his sector map for this galaxy, Rats! All he could hope for was to land his ship and hope he would be able to accomplish the repairs on his own. The Mongrel Dane class cruiser could not match his manuverability. Flame slipped his small patrol craft, the Jaguar, into a geosynchronous orbit around the third planet, with the planets class L moon between the cruiser and his ship. Now he had a few moments to to evaluate the situation.
Flame polled his crew, 3 Siamian Uninauts,Flicker, his Co-pilot/Navigator, ESPerann, his communicator and Felicia the flight engineer, known to all as Feely, all were accounted for and unharmed from the chase and near miss. Also on board the Jaguar was the reason for this trip, Her Majesty the Princess of Felinia, the eldest daughter of King Tutinheimer the Great, 39th king of the 13th planet of Solar System 3120,the munificent Sophia, she was unharmed also, though a bit shaken and irate at the disturbance of her nap. The Jaguar had been tasked with transporting Princess Sophia to the transgalatic conference on Planetary Hairball Etiquette when they had been detected and Attacked by the Dane Class cruiser, chased into the unknown realms of hyperspace during thier flight to the relative safety of thier present position. Flame perused the third planet using his visiscope, doing a quick survey of the surface he established that the planet had an Oxygen based atmospherebut was 2/3 water,,,YUK, and while the planet was inhabited, the population was sparse and of low IQ,thus posing no threat to a Star fighter Patrol vessel. He made a command decision to orbit the planet and find a suitable landing and repair site, his decision made, he decended from geo orbit and prepared for atmospheric entry without his horzontal stabilizer, he was approaching orbital stability at perigee when the Dane spotted him and made a targeting run, Flame had to risk all or lose his ship, he reversed the prrr drive and threw the ship into hsss alignment, the ship rolled on it's back all four landing gear extended, shooting a stream of ionic bullets from it's nose gun. The Dane cruiser had but one choice, try to out run the ion bullets, The Dane's commander, Rear Admiral Wolf, slammed the Dane into BRK overdrive, instantaniously the Dane was in Hyperdrive and away, Adm. Wolf cleared the ninth planet and sought the safety of an asteriod belt, the Ion bullets pelted into the belt but all missed the Dane. Adm. Wolf was not pleased, he had the Felinian Star fighter in his sights and had let him evade capture, but he was sure the Star fighter had crashed into the planets watery surface and all aboard had drowned. Adm. Wolf turned to Lt. Cocker, Another rabbit chased down the hole, he laughed.
Capt. Flame adroitly used the extended landing gear to stabilize the decent of the Jaguar, approaching the surface of the planet at mach 2 he sucessfully flipped the craft back over. They were over water, yeeegods no place to land here, they must find land, there on the visiscope, 45 degrees off to port, about .24 parsecs away, a coastline. Flicker, help with the controls, she's yawing badly, head for that coastline. Fortyfive seconds later they cross the coast, losing altitude, but that is ok, they are over what looks to be a desert, speed down to .5 mach. In the back cabin Princess Sophia's lunch is late, and the ride has been very rough and noisy, she has had enough of this, she will speak to the Captain, she jumps from her sofa only to be jolted to the floor, she screams at Capt Creme, you imbecile! Can't you fly this thing, why couldn't father have sent me on a Star Cruiser! Flame fighting the controls is distracted by the Princesses scream, turns to check on her, Flicker yells "Watch out" Flame turns to see a triangular structure sticking up out of the desert, right in thier path, the left wing grazes the tip of the object, spinning the craft out of control, bouncing upward. They drop to the desert floor, still spinning but upright for several hundred yards coming to rest in a cloud of dust next to a river. Feely, strictly by instinct, blows open the escape hatch and they all scramble out to safety. they look for cover fearing the return of the Dane to finish them off. They run for a field of tall grass in front of the ship, reaching safety. Night is decending on them, thier ship is destroyed but they are safe for the time being. During the night they will survey thier surroundings, during daylight they will sleep and plot thier next move. ESPerann will evaluate the beings that inhabit this planet, see if they are trainable or otherwise usable.

I should have known it would, I mowed and watered the lawn yesterday evening. Rain makes me happy,,,Creme,, now thats another story,he wants to go out on his balcony but refuses to risk getting his tootsies wet,,he might melt,so he sits and yowls and hisses at me because I don't make it stop, it has been raining for about three hours now so he gave up and is sleeping by the door. My hummingbirds have moved on,I did not see any yesterday. They are hormonally driven to migrate south, the sources I looked up say to leave your feeders out for a few weeeks just to help out any stragglers and there is one species that winters over in an area that we are on the northwestern fringe of, so I will keep one up till the first freeze. I keep a corn and nut mix out for the little creatures also during the winter.

There is an animal rescue facility just west of Hershey Pa. that is run by a RN, I have visited there several times during my stint with Siamese Rescue of Texas. It is located in a rather large geodesic dome structure which at one time was a residence, it also has several wings off the central structure. The Main area is mostly open with various runs and structures for animals to play or sleep on.There are also several areas that are penned in but attached to the house so the animals can go outside during good weather. It also has a kitchen and clinic area. The facility is run by one person but she is assisted by many volunteers that drive in from a far away as NYC and Pittburgh for a day. I took cats up there that were not adoptable for whatever reason and she would take them in as long as she had room. It seemed every time I went up there I got snowed in, you have to fly in to Harrisburg,Pa via O'Hare and then rent a car and drive up to Hershey,It was always an adventure to see when you could get out. At the facility they keep all kinds of non-aggressive animals, cats, squirrels, raccoons and rabbits mostly, dogs were ruled out due to thier nature and lack of runs.

Still raining, just a slow gentle rain, just what we needed, maybe the farmers can make anothere hay crop afterall. All for now, I have to go do my domestic duties, laundry, feed the critter etc.
